Sustainability in Manufacturing: How the INEOS Grenadier Is Built to Last

For drivers in Waterford, MI, and across Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois, the INEOS Grenadier isn’t just an off-road powerhouse. It’s a vehicle built with longevity and responsibility in mind. From the first sketch to the final assembly, every Grenadier is designed to last, reducing environmental impact and redefining what it means to invest in a truly sustainable SUV.

The Philosophy of Durability

At INEOS, sustainability starts with durability. A vehicle that lasts decades has a smaller environmental footprint than one replaced every few years. That is why every Grenadier component is engineered to last, from the Full Box-Section Ladder Frame to the galvanized, corrosion-resistant body. The engine, gearbox, axle, and transfer case are carefully selected and tuned to handle demanding conditions.

Underride protection shields critical components from impact, while a high-quality powder coat finish protects against stone chips and off-road scrapes. Beam axles, developed with Carraro’s 50 years of heavy-duty experience, are simple, rugged, and reliable with fewer parts to fail.

Built on a durable body-on-frame, the Grenadier combines galvanized steel and lightweight aluminum closures with E-coat, powder coating, and hot wax processes to ensure long-lasting performance. Each Grenadier is built to withstand real-world challenges, so owners can enjoy years of reliable performance without contributing to unnecessary waste.

Sustainable Manufacturing Practices

For INEOS, sustainability isn’t a buzzword; it’s built into how the Grenadier is made. At the Hambach manufacturing facility, major changes were made to reduce emissions and increase renewable energy use, starting with a switch to biomass heat production.

Instead of relying solely on gas, they now uses locally sourced woodchips—up to 14,000 tonnes every year—as a renewable energy source. Two massive boilers burn these chips to create steam, which powers turbines and connected generators capable of producing 9.2 megawatts of energy. That’s enough to power roughly 6,000 homes.

This system now provides about three-quarters of the facility’s heating needs, with the existing gas boiler covering the rest. Even the byproduct ash from the burned woodchips finds new purpose. Instead of being discarded, it’s shared with local farmers as a nutrient-rich fertilizer, creating a sustainable loop between industry and agriculture.

Altogether, these changes are expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by around 8,800 tonnes annually, reflecting INEOS Automotive’s commitment to responsible production without compromising the Grenadier’s strength or quality.*

Looking Ahead: The Future of Sustainability at INEOS

Sustainability at INEOS goes beyond the factory floor. The company is rethinking how materials are made, used, and reused—helping to move from a “take, make, dispose” model toward a circular economy where resources retain value for as long as possible.

Through innovation and partnership, INEOS believes it’s possible to keep polymers in use and out of landfills by rethinking how they’re produced and recovered at the end of their life. This commitment to innovation and responsible production also drives the brand’s future in mobility.

The INEOS Fusilier will carry this same philosophy forward—combining efficiency, durability, and cleaner power solutions to continue reshaping the future of SUVs. INEOS isn’t just building vehicles that last; it’s building a framework for a more sustainable future. One where performance, practicality, and environmental responsibility can coexist.
